La Fundación K-9 was founded by Richard DeBerry, a lifelong dog enthusiast, breeder, and trainer with a deep passion for the Presa Canario breed. Richard’s journey began when his father introduced him to the world of Doberman Pinschers, sparking a lifelong love for show dogs, working dogs, and family guardians.
As a young adult, Richard started his own breeding program with a Blue Nose Pit Bull Terrier, but his true calling came when he discovered the Presa Canario. Known for their strength, loyalty, and protective nature, the Presa captured Richard’s heart. After extensive research, he purchased his first Presa, Brock. Unfortunately, Brock developed hip dysplasia resulting in Richard making the decision to rehome him with his breeder. This situation reinforced Richard’s commitment to health testing, ethical breeding practices, and responsible dog ownership.
Determined to improve the health and quality of the breed, Richard sought out health-tested Presa Canarios in Europe. This mission led him to the Canary Islands—, birthplace of the Presa Canario, where he hand-selected his foundation dogs, including Marco Kujumdjiev CGC TKN “Greedy Man”, from some of the most prestigious breeders in the world.
Today, La Fundación K-9 is home to 12 carefully selected, health-tested Presa Canarios. Our program is dedicated to preserving the breed’s temperament, working ability, and overall health while producing world-class Presa Canarios for families, working homes, and enthusiasts who value quality and integrity.
